From doodle to canvas
A practice painting
At the time I’d never done a painting this size before, so I decided to try it out on a small piece of canvas.
It helped me see what worked and what didn’t, mostly in the coloring. But I also saw the way I painted the clouds looked more like the aftermath of a disaster.
The Caddy
My first car was a 1995 Cadillac Deville. It has a moderately creased hood from hitting a deer, which is why I could afford it.
“The panoramic painting”
I like taking up space with my art, and the idea for the canvas shape came from panoramic photos. The size presented a challenge when laying down the gradient and achieving a symmetrical arc. There was little time between laying the paint down and the paint drying, so I learned to blend as I worked my way across the canvas instead of going back over it.
The completed piece
When I was finished I felt that it was the best painting I’d made at the time. I was proud of it and still am, and it’s proven difficult to part with. The colors used in this painting have become a reoccurring theme.
