If I’m Never Happy (2019)
I made this at a time I was very much into gold and anything “gaudy”. I’m not really sure where inspiration first came from, but with the title in mind it was during I time when I had more money than I was used to.
It was also a time when I was doing a lot of work to undo what I saw as beautiful, so I found fascination in what was seen as universally beautiful or desirable. I think I find a lot of those themes wrapped up in this piece.

Acrylic on Canvas
I began with my background since I already had an idea for my subject. I loved the contrast of red and blue and wanted to convey a sense of royalty and richness.
Early Progress
Roses and Glitter
I once resisted things that I saw to be the pinnacle of femininity, but it turns out I actually love those things. Shiny, glittery, flowers— I’ll take it all. I really enjoyed painting the roses.
I experimented with using a paint of glass to create rain “splatters” but it did not have the effect I was looking for. It did however let me visualize the appearance of water all over as a-posed to just on isolated droplets as I had originally intended.
